RED BULL RIDE + STYLE GEARS UP FOR SAN FRANCISCO

Art infused Fixed Gear Event Returns with Open Track Qualifier on

Red Bull Minidrome

San Francisco, CA (April 11, 2012) — On April 28, Red Bull Ride + Style will put the world’s fastest and most stylish fixed gear riders on center stage in Justin Herman Plaza for the second year in a row.  Red Bull Ride + Style,  a collision of fixed gear biking and urban contemporary art, features riders facing off in both track and freestyle competitions with the obstacles designed and decorated by local San Francisco artists.  A fixed-gear bicycle is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast — the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving.  This allows a cyclist to stop without using a brake and also to ride in reverse.  In 2011 the event brought together more than 50 invited riders from both coasts, including riders from fixed gear meccas San Francisco, Portland, New York, and Japan.  This year non-invited riders will have a chance to qualify for the track portion of the event at the Red Bull Minidrome.

The 2012 event boasts a redesigned course for both racers and fixed freestyle riders, featuring artwork from the area’s top artists: Chor Boogie, APEX, Max Ehrman and Jet Martinez. The artists will be collaborating to bring the ramps to life by adding their own style to each feature, utilizing their fine art, graffiti and mural styles to give the course a new look. Each artist is individually established – such as Jet Martinez, the first “artist in residence” at Facebook – but for Red Bull Ride + Style, they will be collaborating to create something that represents their collective creativity. More information about both the artists and the riders can be found at:  http://www.redbullusa.com/ridenstyle

Riders interested in participating in the track portion of the Red Bull Ride + Style will have an opportunity to qualify on Thursday, April 26th at Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street) on the Red Bull Minidrome.  The fastest 15 times will be invited to face off in Saturday’s event against the top ten racers from 2011.  The Red Bull Minidrome is a shrunken version of a velodrome, a traditional arena for track cycling.  Consisting of a steeply banked oval track with two 180-degree circular bends connected by two straight sections, the Red Bull Minidrome delivers velodrome racing conditions in the smallest possible dimensions.

Due to the expected volume of qualifying riders, a pre-registration sheet will be available at the Chrome retail store.  Riders will be able to sign up for a qualifying time slot and fill out the appropriate paperwork starting on April 20.  There is no entry fee for the qualifier (or Red Bull Ride + Style).

Red Bull will again be teaming up with 2011 partners Oakley and SF Bike Coalition for the event, and will also be joined this year by Chrome Bags, Specialized Bicycles and SolRepublic.

JONAH KESSEL DOIN’ IT

13 Apr

Jonah Kessel + SADIO from Matt Reyes on Vimeo.

Young Jonah really shows that his dialed bike control and tech tricks can and will be taken to more and more spots the older and stronger he gets. This blows away his previous flat ground edits. Matt Reyes was behind the lens and laptop so you know everything is going to be crisp and clean cut. Jonah may be the only one small enough to ride china banks and have it look sick. I am more than stoked to see how this guy is progressing.

Elliot Milner April Edit

13 Apr

OH MY GOD. What a great surprise. This shit is the best solo web edit to come out of Southern California in a long time.

Elliott Milner April Twenty Twelve from elliott Milner on Vimeo.

This kid came so heavy with this shit. He rides hard and clean. You dont see people put down this hard too often down south. That drop is so crazy, and he can put together some clean ass lines.
Doing it for RYD

POP UP POP OFF

13 Apr

The Grime boys teamed up with iMinusD for a no-notice BBQ / ramp jam in St. James park in San Jose. This edit features Ed Wonka, Gabe Alcantara, Alex Blanco, Matt Montoya, Christian Hamrick, Jeff Dempler, and Mike Schmitt. All of them are heavy hitters and you may need to watch this edit twice to catch some of the tricks that slip by.

POP UP. POP OFF. 1 from GRIME BIKES on Vimeo.

Christian does switch smith to a sick huge switch ice, Mike does a smith across the whole rail and does double peg to tooth hang-over both ways, Gabe at 14 years old shows some real street skill and Ed Wonka is back from surgery with full force. What a crazy feeble to wheely to double peg to over he did. So next level.

Matt Spencer Off Volume

13 Apr

Volume Farewell Edit from Matthew Spencer on Vimeo.

Silky has parted ways with Volume Bike Co, he was kind enough to film a goodbye edit to announce the departure. There is a lot of sick straight airs over some cool drainage hips. I wonder what bike setup we will see matt with at ride and style; 26″ maybe?

new Jamil Gray Edit

13 Apr

Mike Chacon put out this edit of his homie Jamil, the dude has come a long way since the first edits we saw from him. Now he is a regular ripper and can hold is own on a wide variety of street obstacles. Im stoked to watch this dude finally start dialing in his shit with style and ease. Hell yeah man.

BALHOGS MTS PHOTO

9 Apr

Slumworm sent over this photo of Mike Schmitt cruising at what looks like top speed using his BALHOGS grip strip to the Fixed Freestyle HQ. These things are sick for the hill top cruiser who is down to put his life on the line.

TJ H+SON

9 Apr

A mellow tuned edit for the swag lord Tyler Johnson. A model example of what a fixed freestyle pro should be; a model and a pro bike rider.

H PLUS SON: TYLER JOHNSON from Matthew Spencer on Vimeo.

Matt Silky Spencer really came through with the chill vibe and good colors on this edit. Tyler doesn’t disappoint you with the same style you expect from the man always adding in little bits of techness. Pay attention to his footing and his barspins; the man is a machine. The H+SON Todestrieb rims seem to be looking tough too, here’s the stats.
Weight: 600 grams
Material: G609 Alloy
Height: 23 mm
Width: 32 mm
Size: 26″ 29″
Joint: Welded

SILKY 4 CSK

The Silkworm Matt Spencer came through showing off some dialed bike control. Mostly t-shirts but he now rolls with the collar.

IMD OLDIES BUT GOODIES

7 Apr

The boys at the IminusD shop scrapped together an edit of the clips on the shop computer. Hopefully soon they will have a camera again and we will see more of those lovely monthly edits.

LOOSE NUTS SAFARI

7 Apr

So the big man Kareem finally edited a little tease for this trip that went down in the early winter months. Everyone in this is a ripper and you can be sure it will be worth whatever amount of money you have to fork over for your viewing pleasure. Make a crayon rubbing of your parents debit and be the first to hop
on the digital download when it drops.

Gabe Carcia

31 Mar

Another RADIO BIKES Bombtrack frameset has struck the United States.

I havent seen a solo edit that I remember from this guy but he is coming out hard out the gates. I love how these Bombtracks look as built up and it seems like they can take the beating. This kids 180 bars are on lock-down, its crazy for me to see how many dudes were all watching him 3 that set. MOBBBBIN’

PACKY GOLDENCHILD

31 Mar

Damn. it for real blows my mind how good this kid has gotten recently. Its so crazy how he can kill it so hard, but ride for All-City and barely get recognition. Packy is a thunder horse showing the so-cal “pros” that their title is going to be snatched. Definitely now the best 700c rider from the LA area. So stoked on this guy.

MTS 60/40 CROOK

Ed Wonka took this flick of Mike Schmitt on his iPhone today while crusing around downtown SJ.

Its a weird rail cause you roll down a ramp and then when you lock in your front peg is grinding up as your rear is going down. Mike is a grind maniac, what the hell.

NCDD

Your prescribed dose of english grit.

The Ninja Cats boys are at it again, this edit is a little light-hearted compared to some of their hammer dropping madness in their previous edits. But that does not mean it isn’t a good watch. I love the 90s skate style editing with the fisheye removal always keeping you on your toes.

Sol is a force force to be reckoned with, I really want to see him on 26s. Oscar is a banshee and stays killing it with voldemort swag.

Hit up the Ninja Cats online store and buy yourself something nice.
